Jeremy E. Karpel’s experience extends beyond courtroom advocacy. Throughout his career, he has worked in government, academia, private investigations, and legal consulting, providing a broader perspective that benefits clients facing criminal investigations and prosecution.
An Investigator’s Perspective
Before focusing exclusively on criminal defense, Mr. Karpel was a licensed Private Investigator and has spent more than a decade managing complex investigations alongside investigators, forensic experts, and other specialists. Understanding how evidence is collected, interviews are conducted, and investigations develop allows the firm to identify issues that might otherwise be overlooked. This experience is particularly valuable in cases involving digital evidence and computer device seizures, as well as complex financial investigations.
Teaching Criminal Law
Since 2018, Mr. Karpel has served as a Professor in the Department of Criminology and Justice Studies at California State University, Northridge. He teaches courses including Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Criminal Investigations, White Collar Crime, Criminal Courts, and Legal Ethics. Remaining active in legal education helps him stay engaged with developing legal issues while reinforcing the careful legal analysis that clients expect from their attorney.
Government and Professional Experience
Earlier in his career, Mr. Karpel gained experience with the United States Attorney’s Office (Department of Justice) in Washington, D.C., the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s Office, and the County Jail Own Recognizance Unit. He is licensed to practice before all California state courts, the California Supreme Court, and the United States District Courts for the Central, Southern, Eastern, and Northern Districts of California, allowing the firm to represent clients in both state and federal criminal matters.
In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Karpel regularly serves as a Consulting Producer and Technical Consultant for crime and legal programming in film and television, providing guidance on criminal investigations, courtroom procedure, legal terminology, and trial strategy.
Karpel Law Group represents clients throughout Encino, the San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles County, and communities across California. The firm handles matters ranging from misdemeanor and felony defense to white collar investigations, federal criminal defense, pre-charge investigations, violent crimes, and other complex criminal matters. Every case receives the same commitment to preparation, communication, and individualized representation.
